Malta Marina Concession Creates New Berths
Jul 19, 2010George Clifford
I was gratified to hear that Malta has been awarded a new seasonal 120 berth marina concession at Kalkara creek within Grand Harbour.
Three pontoons will be installed and stern-to mooring set into place for the next eight years. In addition, a range of services such as berthing assistance, provision of supplies and other related ancillary services will also be now available.
In July 2009, a list of 860 permanent yacht berths in three sites - Sa Maison, Ta' Xbiex (Manoel Island) and the Menqa area in Marsa - and temporary (seasonal) marinas in other sites, were settled.
Malta currently has 1,500 berths, with a waiting list of 250 and is the first marina concession to be awarded. By 2015, it is estimated that a further 750 will be needed, with 150 winter berths and 150 temporary sites.
This is good news of course, and it does mean that more space increases stopover opportunities for charters, hopefully for skippered and flotilla yachts under 50 foot and custom craft up to 100 foot, as well as the superyacht class.
Great sailboats like Drumbeat ( 42 foot) and Cookielicious ( 72 foot) will always be cruising around this valuable mooring spot whilst heading for Mediterranean waters or, as is the case with Drumbeat, on her way whilst circumnavigating the globe.
