Westward Cup To Cowes Week - Yachting Is High Season.
Jul 12, 2010George Clifford
Well, it’s that time of year rapidly approaching again – Cowes Week, at the end of this month. It’s a busy time on the Solent as the Westward Cup was being hotly contested during the past week.
Large 125 – 140 foot big, old style schooner sailing yachts, fully rigged, were being put through their paces by up to 40 strong supplemented crews!
It’s a race I always felt that Black Swan, a magnificent 20 foot beam, full rigged sail boat, would make a strong bidding for as she’s absolutely ideal at 132 foot, although she does spend most of her time around more sedate Mediterranean waters.
Or even the rather splendid Juliet, a fetching and streamlined 3 sail vessel, also constantly lapping around the Western Med all year round, just tipping the superyacht scales at 143 foot with a mighty 29 foot beam.
There are many who are also particularly partial to the stripped down, elegant looks of the Christianne B, a very streamlined 3 sail, 137 foot lady and her 6 crew, another favourite of the Med cruising set, at any time, it seems to me.
The small to mid range sail yachts are always much in demand at this time of the year as there is so much interest in either cruising or racing, and of course, the Marmaris bareboat race for 40ft to 52 ft boats is not that far away now in October.
